When the addictive process has lasted long enough and penetrated deeply enough into the life and mind of the addict, the empty space left by the losses caused by progressive, destructive addiction is filled up with regrets, if-onlys and could-have-beens. In early addiction the addict tends to live in the future; in middle and late addiction he begins to dwell more and more in the past. And it is usually an unhappy, bitterly regretted past. The first casualty of addiction, like that of war, is the truth. At first the addict merely denies the truth to himself. But as the addiction, like a malignant tumor, slowly and progressively expands and invades more and more of the healthy tissue of his life and mind and world, the addict begins to deny the truth to others as well as to himself. He becomes a practiced and profligate liar in all matters related to the defense and preservation of his addiction, even though prior to the onset of his addictive illness, and often still in areas as yet untouched by the addiction, he may be scrupulously honest. First the addict lies to himself about his addiction, then he begins to lie to others.

Mark 27 Comments Call me cynical, but I have learned not to trust what clients say about their commitment to recovery. Ali Binazir I went to a talk a couple of weeks ago by a psychologist who said that battered wives go back to the abusing husband on average 7 times, even when social services has already intervened and set everything up for her to leave for good. To someone who is guaranteed to beat you up. Does that make any sense? You know what else doesn’t make sense? BDSM dungeons, where people pay good money to get abused by some latex-clad lady. Here’s a rubric I made for making sense of seemingly bizarre human behavior.
If I saw it pop up over and over again — say, millions of people doing it over the course of decades and centuries — chances are that those people weren’t totally nuts or stupid. There must be some deep biological phenomenon at work here. You probably know folks who are stuck in terrible relationships, or who keep on having the same bad relationship with differently-named people.
Heck, you may even be that person who engages in the serial self-flagellation. You also know people who systematically sabotage their own happiness: Turns out there’s a dark reason to all of this.

Many states are now letting people with none violent drug related offenses go through long term inpatient drug rehabilitation instead of time spent in jail or prison. However, the courts do not usually help find the rehab program for you. In most cases that task is left up to friends or family members of the one in jail. Typically, the person must be accepted to a drug rehab before he or she can be released from the jail. Some county courts may suggest rehab instead of jail routinely, thus, will make the steps to produce this action much easier.
Other courts you might have to go through lots of red-tape to materialize this plan. Then the lawyer or public-defender may approach the district attorney and finally the judge and hopefully they’ll approve drug rehabilitation over time spent in jail or prison. Prison only tends to make an individual worst. By keeping them away from society for too long makes it considerably harder for them to adapt back into the community. In prison, inmates spend most of there day around other inmates where they receive negative feedback, which, usually leads to the development of many new bad habits detrimental to their sobriety and positive living.
In fact, if a person is sentenced prison in stead of drug rehab that person should still get themselves checked into an intensive drug rehabilitation program upon their release to insure a smooth transition back into the community.

Contact After Drug or Alcohol Rehab: Four Relapse Warning Signs Awareness is key to building a healthy, meaningful and fulfilling life after rehab. You need to be alert and aware to spot the early warning signs of relapse into addiction and take whatever action is necessary to maintain your recovery. A principal warning sign of relapse is lying to yourself or to others. Remember how you lied when you were a functioning alcoholic: Sometimes you even believed your own hype.
So, if you are aware you have told your partner a little white lie, recognize it as a slip and take action immediately to correct the situation. When you blame anyone else for anything, remember that by doing so you are making yourself a victim. And if you are a victim, who can blame you for relapsing into drinking or drugging? So recognize you are on the slippery slope to victimhood and relapse if you notice yourself laying blame rather than taking responsibility. For men there is often shame around not being able to make your partner happy.
